Basically, if you wouldn’t want it floating around in a company group chat... maybe don’t paste it into an AI chatbot. 👀

Here are the five things experts say you should never share:

Don’t give an AI your:

🏠 Home address📱 Phone number🪪 Social Security number👤 Other information that could directly identify you

There’s really no reason your chatbot needs to know where you live. 😂

Your AI doesn’t need the entire story about your relationship drama.

That includes sensitive information about:

💔 Relationships🧠 Mental health🔐 Your private life

Sure, AI can help you think through a problem—but you don’t need to provide every identifying detail.

This one’s especially important.

Avoid putting things like:

📋 Medical records💊 Diagnoses🩺 Detailed healthcare information

into a general-purpose chatbot unless you understand exactly how that service handles sensitive health information.

This is a BIG one if you use AI at work.

Don’t paste:

💻 Source code📊 Client information🤫 Trade secrets📄 Confidential documents🔒 Anything covered by an NDA

Your boss probably won’t be thrilled if your “quick ChatGPT question” accidentally includes the company’s secret sauce. 😂

And please don’t give an AI your entire financial life.

That means keeping things like:

🏦 Bank account information💳 Credit card numbers📈 Investment records🧾 Tax documents💰 Pay stubs

out of the chat.

Don’t panic.

If you’ve already put sensitive information into a chatbot, you can delete the conversation and review the service’s privacy settings.

And going forward, experts recommend using general descriptions instead of specific identifying details whenever possible.

For example, instead of:

Maybe just say:

“I’m dealing with a tax issue. What are some things I should consider?”

You can still get useful information without handing over your entire identity. 👍
