It seems like EVERYTHING costs more these days… and apparently Mother Nature is looking for ways to join the party. 😭💸
According to a list from Newsweek, El Niño could cause some of our favorite foods to get more expensive as extreme weather affects farming around the world. 🌎🌾
So which foods could take a hit? Here’s what you might want to keep an eye on:
🍫 CHOCOLATE — Because apparently we can’t even have emotional support chocolate without worrying about the price. 😭
🫒 OLIVE OIL — Your salad dressing might start feeling like a luxury purchase. 😂
☕ COFFEE — THIS ONE IS PERSONAL. If coffee prices go up, we’re all going to need coffee to recover from the news about coffee prices. 😩☕
🍞 BREAD — Wheat production is facing serious challenges, and a shortage could eventually push up the price of bread. So that $4 loaf could be looking at us like, “Yeah… I’m $7 now.” 💀🍞
The timing isn’t exactly the same for everything, either. Chocolate and sugar could be affected first, while bread could follow a wheat shortage. Coffee and foods made with palm oil could take anywhere from three to 16 months to feel the effects. 📆
There’s also a much bigger concern here than Americans paying a little extra at the grocery store. 🌎
Global wheat production is approaching a 56-year low, while drought risks in places like India, Thailand, and Vietnam could also threaten rice imports. 🌾🍚
The good news is that American agriculture is generally expected to avoid the worst of El Niño’s effects, although individual states could still see some impacts. 🇺🇸
The bigger issue is what’s happening in parts of South Asia and West Africa, where agricultural damage could make food insecurity even worse for some of the world’s poorest communities. 😔
So… maybe stock up on coffee, chocolate, bread and olive oil?
Actually, don’t panic-buy. 😂
But if you see me at the grocery store pushing a cart full of chocolate and coffee, mind your business. 🛒🍫☕
