Okay… this might be the most wholesome workplace policy ever 👀
Italy just made history by becoming the first country in the world to offer paid leave for workers who need to care for a sick pet 🐾💼
Yeah… you can officially call out of work because your dog isn’t feeling well 🥹
🐕 How it started
This all goes back to a real-life case in 2017.
A librarian in Rome fought for time off to take care of her sick dog—and WON.
Her argument? Under Italian law, letting an animal suffer is actually a crime. So forcing someone to choose between their job and their pet put them in an impossible situation.
And now… that one case has turned into a nationwide policy 🙌
📅 What the new rule allows
Workers in Italy can now take:
👉 Up to 3 paid days off per year👉 Specifically to care for a sick pet 🐶🐱
But there are a couple conditions:
- Your pet has to be microchipped 🏷️
- A vet must confirm the situation is urgent 🏥
So yeah… probably not gonna work for your low-maintenance goldfish 😂🐟
🐾 Why this is a big deal
Italy has over 60 million pets, so this could impact a LOT of people.
And honestly, for pet owners, it just makes sense—pets are family ❤️
😅 Meanwhile in the U.S…
Let’s just say… we’re not quite there yet.
Some people are still struggling to get paid sick days for themselves, let alone their pets 😬
🤔 Final thought
Between this and everything else, Italy might be setting a new standard for how we treat pets—and the people who love them.
So the real question is…When are we getting “puppy sick days” over here? 🐶💼
