Halloween is supposed to be scary, but nothing is more terrifying than opening a bag of candy and realizing you paid MORE money for LESS chocolate. 😱🍫 Welcome to “shriek-flation,” where candy gets smaller, prices get bigger, and your trick-or-treat budget goes straight to the graveyard.
If you’ve noticed that your Halloween candy haul doesn’t look quite as impressive as it used to, you’re not imagining things. Candy prices have jumped a whopping 71% since 2021, and some packages have shrunk by nearly 17% in just a few years. 👻💸
So, what’s behind this sugary nightmare? A consumer advocate group says manufacturers are dealing with rising costs, including shipping. But the biggest culprit is cocoa, which saw prices skyrocket nearly 144% between 2019 and 2024. That means chocolate lovers are paying the price, even if they’re getting fewer bites for their buck.
Here are some of the biggest Halloween candy offenders:
🍫 1. Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Assortment – That bag is now 17% smaller than it used to be. Less chocolate? That’s a dark development.
🍬 2. Rolo Party Pack – It went from 40 ounces to just 35.6 ounces, all while prices increased. Apparently, the caramel center isn’t the only thing getting squeezed.
🥜 3. Reese’s Miniatures Party Pack – Another victim of the shrinking candy aisle! The package dropped from 40 ounces to 35.6 ounces. That’s fewer peanut butter cups to go around, and we’re not sure we’re ready to forgive that.
🍫 4. Hershey’s Miniatures Assortment – This package shrank from 40 ounces to 35.9 ounces. Does that mean fewer Krackel and Mr. Goodbar bars? THAT’S BOGUS. 😤
🎉 5. M&M’s Party Size – Even the party-sized bag isn’t safe! M&M’s Party Size packages have shrunk by almost 10% since 2019. At this point, the only thing getting bigger is the disappointment.
So, when you’re loading up your cart for Halloween, make sure you’re checking those package sizes. That bag might look the same on the outside, but there’s a good chance there’s less candy hiding inside. 👀
And if you’re planning to hand out candy this year, you might have to make a tough decision: give every kid fewer pieces, or accept that your candy budget is going to get absolutely demolished. 🎃🍬
What’s the worst candy to see shrink? And be honest: are you still buying Halloween candy, or are you switching to handing out toothbrushes and hoping the neighborhood kids don’t egg your house? 😂🪥
