You know those moving walkways at the airport — the ones that make you feel like a futuristic superhero as you casually speed-walk past regular people?
Well… they might be going extinct.
A new report says some airports are pulling the plug on moving walkways — and it’s not because they’re broken (even though, yeah, they usually are). It’s all about money.
💸 Why Airports Want Them Gone
Turns out, those walkways kill business. Airports make serious cash not just from planes, but from kiosks, restaurants, and retail shops. And when people zoom by on a moving walkway, they’re way less likely to stop and spend money.
No shopping = no profits.
Also, the design of these walkways creates a divider, keeping foot traffic on one side of the terminal and away from shops on the other. Less foot traffic = less impulse buying.
😬 Plus, They’re Kind of a Mess
Even when they do work, walkways have issues:
- Walkers vs. standers drama
- People with rolling bags taking up too much room
- Not enough space for those with mobility challenges
- Constant maintenance headaches
Because of all that, newer airport terminals are skipping them entirely, and some older ones are even ripping them out.
So yeah — get ready to hoof it to your gate. And maybe bring your walking shoes next time you fly.
👟 Would you miss moving walkways, or are you cool walking the whole airport?
