Health Hack: Don’t Exercise, Just Do Everything Faster

(Mark Bolster/UPMC)

Hate working out? Good news — science says you might not need the gym... if you’re out here sprinting through your chores like you’re on Survivor.

According to a new study in the journal Circulation, even if you never hit the gym, you can still rack up health benefits just by rushing through your daily tasks. And yes, we’re talking about stuff like speed-vacuuming, power-walking your trash to the curb, or basically living like you’re five minutes late to everything.

Researchers tracked the movements of 24,000 adults who don’t get regular exercise. But the ones who moved briskly through their day — even for just five minutes a day — had significantly lower risks of heart attacks and strokes down the line.

We’re talking up to 50% less risk — all from living life in fast-forward.

The lead author of the study said:

“It’s a good idea to find ways to fit exertion into your daily life. But that doesn’t mean you have to actually exercise.”

Translation: No treadmill? No problem. Just speed-wipe that counter like you’re in a cooking show finale, and boom — you’re basically doing cardio.

So next time someone judges you for breaking a sweat while racing through the grocery store, just tell ‘em: “I’m working on my heart health, bro.”
