The internet somehow became even messier in 2025 — and Merriam-Webster noticed. 😬🌐
Their official Word of the Year is “SLOP,” short for “A.I. slop.” They define it as:
“Digital content of low quality that is produced, usually in quantity, by means of artificial intelligence.”
In other words… all that sketchy, cookie-cutter stuff clogging your feed. 📱💀
A.I. content got so cheap and easy this year that it’s basically unavoidable. From articles packed with wrong facts… to those weird “fun” videos your dad forwards you — like an old lady on a sled smashing into a fence — it’s all A.I. slop, baby. 😵💫🛷
Merriam-Webster says they picked the word because it perfectly sums up the problem in just four letters — and because it gives us a way to mock A.I. instead of fear it. 😂
One editor put it this way:
“The word sends a little message to A.I.: When it comes to replacing human creativity, sometimes you DON’T seem too super-intelligent.” 🔥🧠
Other words that made their shortlist this year included “gerrymander,” “touch grass,” “performative,” “tariff,” and Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year, “six seven.” 📊📖
