Clark Howard: What to do if you haven’t received your $600 stimulus payment

If you’re eligible for the $600 stimulus payment but haven’t received the money yet, WOKV’s Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says you are in good company.

Howard says the IRS was put in a tough position with Congress hoping to send out checks to all eligible people by January 15th.

“They [the IRS] went through their database, they sent payments electronically to the last known payment recipient source they could come up with, i.e. bank account. Well, according to the tax prep firms, that went out wrong to 15-million people. So, 15-million people who were expecting their money, it’s gone into never, neverland,” says Howard.

If you’re part of the group that hasn’t received a check yet, Howard says you may want to take action.

“So, you go to irs.gov, and there’s a ‘find my payment’ button. You click on it, you put in some key information, and the IRS will tell you where they thought they sent your money to. And then, that starts a process of you trying to get your money by giving the IRS a new payment routing,” Howard says.

Howard says if that still doesn’t work for you, you may have to wait until you file your taxes this year.

“What the IRS actually wants you to do, is just when you file your 2020 tax return this winter or spring, that you get the money through your tax return that you didn’t get electronically,” says Howard.
