Jacksonville — The Northeast Florida Association of REALTORS® packed approximately 75,000 meals for hungry children, seniors, and families in Northeast Florida during the NEFAR Charitable Foundation’s Hunger Fight Pack-a-Thon. The event was staged in the ballroom of the Adam W. Herbert University Center at the University of North Florida.
A $25,000 donation from the NEFAR Charitable Foundation afforded almost 300 NEFAR members to bag and box almost 75-thousand meals. In addition, NEFAR’s new Feed-the-Need-to-Read program donated 2,545 books to preschoolers in an effort to combat illiteracy.
“Hunger Fight is one of our members’ favorite annual events,” said NEFAR President Missi Howell. “REALTORS® know that communities are more than houses and making sure our area children have nutritious food when they are not in school is just one of the ways we love to give back.”
The annual event, now in its fourth year, provides nutritious meals to Title 1 elementary school children and their families. The new reading program donated colorful, age-appropriate books to under-served preschoolers in day care centers throughout the region.
“Hunger Fight is about giving back to those who are not as fortunate,” said NEFAR President-elect Mark Rosener. “We are impacting people’s lives by providing food. To get together as a REALTOR® group and make that impact is really cool. To be able to do it in a big way, as a group collectively, is a big deal.”
