Jacksonville — Sunrise Emergency & Family Dental Care and Florida Baptist Convention is hosting Smiles for Miles 904 on Saturday, March 12, with required pre - and free - dental screenings to be held on Thursday, March 10, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The annual event, now in its second year, will offer free dental services to 100 local residents. Six dentists, two hygienists, seven dental assistants, and five office members will provide exams, X-rays, extractions, and emergency dental treatments. Patients will be served on a first-come, first-served basis at Sunrise Dental Office and Florida Baptist Convention’s mobile dental unit. Prospective patients will be screened for financial eligibility.
“We’re extremely excited to offer services to those who cannot afford important dental procedures or preventive care,” said Dr. Michael Thomasino, founder of Sunrise Emergency & Family Dental Care. “My staff and I look forward to treating our under-served community once again.”
Dr. Thomasino, who previously served on mission trips decided to run the community event because he believes that charity begins at home.
“The reason why I and many others have gone into dentistry is that we really love to help people and have a talent and an infinity with our hands, but sometimes the business side just gets in the way, so here’s an opportunity to remove those barriers and get people out of pain and on with life.”
Dr. Thomasino’s all volunteer staff will offer approximately $60,000 worth of services in the Sunrise office. Thomasino is also footing the bill for getting the word out because he says, “I truly believe in this cause.”
“We’ve always felt that the emergency room is not the proper place for emergency dental treatment,” he continued. “The local dentist office is. That’s why we offer emergency dental services at all three of our North Florida locations.”
Florida Baptist Convention has also partnered with local dentists since 1973 to provide dental care for the under-served community.
“We are excited to partner again with Sunrise Emergency & Family Dental Care to provide services to those in need in Orange Park and Jacksonville,” said Marc Johnston, the Community Ministries Catalyst for the Florida Baptist Convention.
Jacksonville Emergency & Family Dental Care opened in 2006, with two locations in Arlington and the Northside, as the city’s first acute dental care center dedicated to treating the needs of the community.
Dr. Michael Thomasino is the founder, owner, and operator of both the Jacksonville Emergency & Family Dental Care offices with locations in Arlington and the Northside and Orange Park’s Sunrise Emergency & Family Dental Care. All three locations offer complete dental services, cosmetic procedures, and emergency care.
The event is located at Sunrise Emergency & Family Dental Care at Suite #19, Orange Park, Florida, 32073.
