Happy Columbus Day… Indigenous Peoples’ Day… or just another Monday at work! 😂💼
If you woke up this morning hoping for a three-day weekend, we have some potentially disappointing news: only 20 states give their state employees a paid holiday today. 😭
Yep! Even though Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day are recognized on the federal calendar, that doesn’t automatically mean everybody gets the day off with pay. Your state gets to have a say in how it handles the holiday.
The 20 states listed as giving state employees a paid holiday are Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.

But some states have found their own ways to handle the day!
🍂 OKLAHOMA: The second Monday in October is Oklahoma Native American Day, but it’s unpaid for state employees. The state also has a separate law requiring the governor to proclaim a day honoring each tribe on a date chosen by that tribe.
🏖️ DELAWARE: The state replaced Columbus Day in 2009 with a floating holiday for state workers. Basically, they can choose another day to take off instead. Honestly, a day off you can save for later? Not a bad deal! 😂
🦃 TENNESSEE: The state shifts its day off to the Friday after Thanksgiving, giving state employees a four-day weekend instead. Now THAT’S how you turn a holiday into a vacation. 😎
So, depending on where you work, today could mean a paid day off, a regular day at the office, or a holiday you’re saving for later.
And if you’re sitting at your desk reading this right now… we’re sorry. 😂☕
Are you working today, or did you score a day off? Let us know!
