Okayβ¦ this might be the most wholesome workplace policy ever π
Italy just made history by becoming the first country in the world to offer paid leave for workers who need to care for a sick pet πΎπΌ
Yeahβ¦ you can officially call out of work because your dog isnβt feeling well π₯Ή
π How it started
This all goes back to a real-life case in 2017.
A librarian in Rome fought for time off to take care of her sick dogβand WON.
Her argument? Under Italian law, letting an animal suffer is actually a crime. So forcing someone to choose between their job and their pet put them in an impossible situation.
And nowβ¦ that one case has turned into a nationwide policy π
π What the new rule allows
Workers in Italy can now take:
π Up to 3 paid days off per yearπ Specifically to care for a sick pet πΆπ±
But there are a couple conditions:
- Your pet has to be microchipped π·οΈ
- A vet must confirm the situation is urgent π₯
So yeahβ¦ probably not gonna work for your low-maintenance goldfish ππ
πΎ Why this is a big deal
Italy has over 60 million pets, so this could impact a LOT of people.
And honestly, for pet owners, it just makes senseβpets are family β€οΈ
π Meanwhile in the U.Sβ¦
Letβs just sayβ¦ weβre not quite there yet.
Some people are still struggling to get paid sick days for themselves, let alone their pets π¬
π€ Final thought
Between this and everything else, Italy might be setting a new standard for how we treat petsβand the people who love them.
So the real question isβ¦When are we getting βpuppy sick daysβ over here? πΆπΌ
