It’s National Sunscreen Day: 36% of People Are Cool Lathering Up Strangers on the Beach

Happy National Sunscreen Day! (Or as some of y’all are calling it: “Oops, I forgot after the third White Claw.”)

A new poll just dropped asking a question no one’s ever comfortably asked at the beach:

👉 If a total stranger asked you to rub sunscreen on their back, would you do it?

  • 36% said “Sure, why not?”
  • 64% said “Absolutely not.”

In the comment section? Chaos. Some folks were scolding the “no” crowd for not taking skin health seriously… while others admitted they’d be down — if the person was hot.(No word on how folks would react if they got rejected for being “unrub-worthy.”)

🔥 But wait — it gets worse… or better?

  • Only 40% of people wear sunscreen regularly in the summer.
  • Just 16% say they “always” wear it.
  • A wild 25% say they NEVER use it.

And before you assume Boomers are the only ones out here barbecuing their epidermis, Gen Z is just as reckless:

  • Half of Gen Z adults got sunburned last year.
  • 10% got blisters.
  • 25% straight-up admit it’s worth the damage for “looking good now.”
  • Protect your vibe, not your dermis, apparently.

🧴 And yes… sunscreen can be overdone

A 48-year-old woman in China ended up with severe vitamin D deficiency from excessive sunscreen use — she avoided the sun so much, she broke a bone rolling over in bed. Yes. Rolling. Over.

The lesson? Moderation, people.

😎 Bottom line:

If you’re headed to the beach this summer:

  • Lather up.
  • Reapply.
  • Don’t be weird about who rubs what where.
  • And please… don’t end up in next year’s “Things We Regret Doing in the Sun” article.
