🧠✨ Scientists Say These Are the 6 Things You Need for Good Mental Health

When you think of good mental health, your first thought might be simple:

😊 Be happy.

But according to a new international study, it’s a lot more complicated than that.

Researchers gathered 122 experts from 26 countries and 11 different fields — including psychology, medicine, sociology, and even theology — to answer one big question:

👉 What does it actually mean to have good mental health?

And despite their different backgrounds, they all landed on the same six key ingredients.

🏆 The 6 Things That Matter Most

According to the experts, good mental health includes:

🎯 Having meaning and purpose

Feeling like your life has direction and that what you do matters.

😊 Life satisfaction

Being generally content with where you are in life.

❤️ Self-acceptance

Being comfortable with who you are — flaws and all.

👥 Connection with others

Having meaningful relationships and feeling connected to people around you.

🗽 Autonomy

Having control over your decisions and the freedom to make choices for yourself.

😄 Happiness

Experiencing positive emotions and enjoyment in life.

🤔 Happiness Isn’t Actually #1

One of the most interesting findings?

Experts say happiness isn’t necessarily the starting point.

Instead, happiness is often the RESULT of having the other pieces in place.

In other words:

You don’t become mentally healthy because you’re happy.

You become happier because you have purpose, strong relationships, self-acceptance, and control over your life. 💡

🔑 The Two Biggest Factors

Researchers say two things stood out above the rest:

🗽 Autonomy and🛡️ Safety

Feeling safe and having the ability to make your own choices were viewed as some of the most important foundations of good mental health.

💭 Final Thought

Good mental health isn’t about being cheerful 24/7.

It’s about building a life that includes purpose, connection, confidence, freedom, and support. ❤️

And if you’re missing one of those pieces right now, that’s okay — because mental health isn’t a destination. It’s something we’re all constantly working on. 🧠✨
