πŸ§‘β€πŸ¦²πŸ’‡β€β™‚οΈ SOME PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO FEND OFF BALDNESS BY . . . β€œHAIR BANKING”

Yesterday was Be Bald and Be Free Day, which is a great reminder that bald is beautiful! πŸ§‘β€πŸ¦² But if you’re not quite ready to embrace the shiny dome lifestyle, there’s an experimental treatment that might let you save your hair for the future. It’s called β€œHair Banking,” and yes, it’s basically what it sounds like.

The idea is to collect your hair NOW, before you start losing it, and potentially use it to fight baldness later. Think of it like freezing your eggs or sperm, except instead of preserving your chances of having kids, you’re trying to preserve your chances of having a full head of hair. πŸ˜‚

Here’s how it works: Doctors collect around 100 to 120 individual hair follicles and store them using a process called cryopreservation. The goal is to preserve the cells inside those follicles so they can potentially be used in the future. If the treatment moves forward successfully, those cells can be multiplied through a process called hair cloning and injected back into your scalp when you’re ready to fight the dreaded receding hairline. πŸ§ŠπŸ’ˆ

Sounds pretty futuristic, right? Well, there’s a catch . . . actually, there are several.

For starters, hair cloning hasn’t been approved by the FDA, and the experimental process isn’t consistently successful. Sometimes the cells don’t multiply properly, or the treatment simply doesn’t work as intended. It also appears to work better on the top of the head than around the hairline, which is unfortunate news for anyone whose forehead has been slowly expanding for the past decade. 😭

Then there’s the price tag. Hair Banking isn’t widely available yet, and where it is offered, the cost can range from $5,000 to $20,000β€”about the same as a traditional hair transplant. The potential upside is that the process is intended to be less invasive than surgery.

So, if you’ve got a full head of hair today, you could theoretically look into preserving some of it for tomorrow. Just don’t expect to freeze a few follicles now and magically wake up with a perfect hairline in 20 years.

For now, Hair Banking is still experimental, expensive, and far from a guaranteed solution. But hey, if science eventually figures out how to beat baldness, maybe the future will be looking a little less . . . follicle-challenged. πŸ˜‚πŸ§‘β€πŸ¦²
