This is not your average scavenger hunt.
To celebrate National Coin Week, Seth Chandler, owner of Witter Coin in San Francisco, hid $25,000 worth of rare coins and historical items all around the city — and yes, people actually found them all by sunset.
It’s part of a now-annual city-wide treasure hunt that Chandler started last year to promote coin collecting. And if you think this is just loose change... think again. The prizes included:
- 11 rare coins
- A gold nugget
- A historic five-dollar bill
- And a Morgan silver dollar from 1893 worth $10,000
All of the items were hidden at iconic spots like the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf, with new clues dropped hourly on Witter Coin’s social media starting at 7AM. By the end of the day, every single item had been found.
Winners were encouraged to tag the shop and post photos of their finds — and while Chandler offered to buy them back, some people chose to hold on to the collectibles to pass them down to their kids. (Now that’s a family heirloom.)
Chandler says he’s already planning to do it again next year — and after this kind of buzz, don’t be surprised if coin collecting suddenly gets a lot cooler.
Let me know if you want a radio tease line like: “A guy just hid $25K worth of rare coins around a city — and yes, people found ALL of it in one day.” Want a few versions for on-air or IG?
