City Council approves incentives package for former Times-Union property

Jacksonville — An incentives package worth $31.59 million dollars has been approved by the Jacksonville City Council for the developer looking to revamp the site of the former Florida Times-Union property on the St. Johns River.

City Councilman Rory Diamond says the vote was unanimous and the project will really change the landscape at 1 Riverside Ave.

“This is a signature property at a very special place in the community, and I think what you’re going to see is a world-class development anchoring the entire Riverside and Brooklyn area,” Diamond tells WOKV.

Fuqua Development LLC and partner TriBridge Residential are proposing a project close roughly $180 million at the site where the Times-Union newspaper was produced for decades. The mixed-use development would include a grocery store, residential areas and a restaurant.

Diamond says another aspect of the project focuses on McCoys Creek, which has been flowing underneath the Times-Union property since it was constructed.

“The creek will be unleashed again and uncovered,” Diamond says. “It should be a beautiful development for the entire community.”
