An energetic golden retriever dashed across the field during Wednesday night’s minor-league baseball game between the Buffalo Bisons and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, WKBW reported.

Rookie, a bat dog with the Trenton Thunder, was on loan to the Bisons for the team’s final homestand of the regular season, the television station reported.

The Bisons played some of their games this season in Trenton, New Jersey, because the Toronto Blue Jays of the American League used Buffalo’s home park, Sahlen Field, for part of their major league schedule when Canada restricted travel for teams based in the U.S. The Bisons are a Triple-A affiliate of the Blue Jays.

During the bottom of the first inning of Wednesday night’s game, Rookie interrupted play by bounding onto the field, WKBW reported. The excited pooch ran past Lehigh pitcher Colton Eastman, circled the mound and then headed back to the Buffalo dugout on the third-base side of the field.

On his Twitter account Thursday, Rookie “apologized” to Buffalo’s Cavan Biggio for disrupting his at-bat.

“I was just so excited to be retrieving bats again,” he tweeted.

Unfortunately for Rookie, the Bisons lost 3-0 to the Iron Pigs.
